Disney Christmas Cruise
December 2016
Holly has always wanted to do Disney around Christmas time so we decided to go on a Disney Merrytime Christmas cruise. It was a 7 night eastern caribbean cruise that visited Tortola, St. Thomas, and Castaway Cay. The ship was decorated for the holidays with a huge tree and gingerbread house in the atrium. We also got to meet Santa and many of the Disney characters were in their holiday outfits. There was various Christmas activities like building gingerbread houses.
Disney Magic
This was our third cruise and every time we have been on the Disney Magic. It kind of felt like home when we stepped onto the ship. We really love it. I know the layout pretty well now. There are tons of activities going on and it isn't overly crowded. Our room was near the front of the ship right next to the forward elevators so we had quick access to the Walt Disney theater and kids camp.
We enjoyed a lot of entertainment on this trip. Each evening there was a main show in the Walt Disney Theater, in addition to tons of other parties and shows throughout the ship. Tangled, The Musical was new this year. The new Star Wars movie, Rogue One, released while we were on the ship. We were actually able to view it earlier than most people in the U.S. since they showed it at 10:45 pm Thursday (2 hours east of Central Standard Time). We also saw Moana, Pete's Dragon, and Dr. Strange for our first time.
Tortola - British Virgin Islands
Tortola was our first port on this cruise. It was raining a bit when we got there, but that didn't stop us from doing a little bit of shopping and taking some pictures. Since we had an excursion booked for the next port, we decided to spend most of the day at port enjoying the ship since many of the guests exited the ship for the day.
St. Thomas - U.S. Virgin Islands
Our next port was St. Thomas. We signed up for the sea safari, snorkel, and beach excursion. The weather was perfect that day. We took a short boat ride to Buck Island for snorkeling. We saw lots of sea turtles and colorful fish. The kids did a great job snorkeling. We then went to Honeymoon beach and enjoyed some beverages. The kids enjoyed playing in the sand and water. It was a really fun day.
Castaway Cay
We love Castaway Cay, but we did not have great weather on our visit this trip. It drizzled throughout the day and by late afternoon it poured down rain. We got drenched heading back to the boat. The kids enjoyed the sand even through the rain, but the water was too cold for snorkeling (at least for me). The BBQ lunch was fantastic.
Is there anything better than the Disney characters? They were all throughout the ship and many of them were in their holiday outfits. We got to meet several of them and take pictures. We even did a character breakfast with Mickey and friends.
If you want to gain a bunch of weight, you should go on a Disney cruise. There is a ton of delicious food on the ship. Each night you have a sit down dinner at one of the 3 restaurants. You rotate through them and have the same serving staff each night. There is also quick serve (hamburgers, french fries, etc.) and pizza on deck nine pretty much all day. Oh, and free 24 hour room service. Animator's Palate is our favorite of the restaurants and since we were there the first night, we got to eat there 3 times on this trip.
Pirate Night
We all had fun dressing up for pirate night. The dinner menus are pirate themed and there is a pirates of the caribbean deck party at night complete with fireworks. The Disney characters are in their pirate gear too.
Formal Night
It is really neat seeing all of the people around the ship dressed up and out for their dinner and show. The Disney characters join in the fun too. Holly and I don't really go out for fancy dinners too often so we really enjoyed this.
Fish Hangers
Holly decided to join in on fish hangers this trip. Basically, a group of families get together (via facebook) and swap small presents throughout the trip. Each family hangs a holder from the fish hanger outside their stateroom. We used Christmas stockings for our holder. The kids loved checking them each day and finding gifts. Holly did a lot of work to make appropriate gifts for each of the other family members.
